  • New Ideas on Normativity

Norms are constraints on actions, beliefs, or intentions. They guide us, among other things, in satisfying desires, in being morally upright, or in acquiring knowledge. However, it is not easy to see what different kinds of norms there are, how different kinds of norms are linked to each other, and how we should deal with norm conflicts. In particular, so-called epistemic norms, which somehow pertain to the formation, maintenance, or revision of beliefs, are in many ways hard to align with moral or prudential norms, which concern more practical matters.

At the conference, we will discuss novel insights and ideas on questions like the following:

    • How do norms, reasons, and values relate to each other? Are they rooted in our actual aims and desires, or are they largely independent of what we in fact feel and want?
    • How do moral, prudential, epistemic, and other kinds of norms relate to each other? For instance, do we have non-moral and non-prudential reasons to comply with epistemic norms, or are epistemic norms merely instrumentalist in the sense that they depend on non-epistemic aims?
    • What kinds of norms govern such activities as making assertions or inquiring into the truth of some proposition? More generally, to what activities do moral, prudential, and epistemic norms respectively extend?
    • Is there a way to balance norms of different kinds, and if yes, how? Is there something like an all-things-considered ought, and if yes, how can it integrate moral, prudential, social, and epistemic requirements?
    • When are we to blame for violating norms? Is there a distinctive epistemic kind of blame? And what are the interrelations between blame, responsibility, and direct voluntary control over actions, intentions, and beliefs?
    • Are our most essential norms internalist (subjectivist) or externalist (objectivist) requirements? How much internalism is needed to preserve their guidance function, and how much externalism is needed to deal with otherwise counterintuitive consequences?

    Keynote Speakers:

    Arianna Falbo (Toronto Metropolitan University)

    Antti Kauppinen (University of Helsinki)

    Kate Nolfi (University of Vermont)

    Sebastian Schmidt (University of Zurich)

    Asbjørn Steglich-Petersen (Aarhus University)

  • Workshop on Ethical, legal, social impact/aspect research frameworks

Co-organised by the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) and the Academy for Responsible Research, Teaching, and Innovation (ARRTI) at the Karlsruher Institute for Technology (KIT).

After more than 25 years of applied ELSI/ELSA (ELS-X) research in the European Union with the adoption of the 4th framework program by the European Commission, many methodological, conceptual and practical challenges remain.

As public awareness grows regarding the complex impacts of technological innovation, research into ethical, legal, social, and economic aspects/impacts/factors is becoming increasingly important to help anticipate and avoid undesirable consequences. Now firmly embedded in European funding requirements for research and innovation actions, this type of research must clearly define its objectives, practices, and intended audiences.

This is exactly where we want to start with this workshop: to stimulate an interdisciplinary discussion about methodological and content-related aspects of ELSI/ELSA/ELSE, fostering collaboration across disciplines to better understand and address the multifaceted nature of these challenges. We also want to raise the profile of the international research scene and contribute to better networking among all those involved in ELSI/ELSA/ELSE-research.

    Call for abstracts and posters

The main aim of this workshop is to engage in focused discussion. Next to a number of invited presentations on best practice examples, this workshop calls for submissions of posters and abstracts for short presentations.

We welcome contributions from all disciplines with focus on ethical, legal, social and (socio)economic issues and especially contributions addressing (but not limited to) the following questions:

    • Who is and ought to be the target audience and what is the end goal of ELS-X?
    • How can ELS-X be leveraged to be truly impactful, rather than a tick-box exercise?
    • How should interdisciplinarity be conceived and implemented?
    • ELS aspect, impacts or ethical, legal, social and economic (ELSE) factors?
    • What methods work well for ELS-X? How can ELS-X research be anticipatory and participatory?
    • What is the ideal timing of ELS-X research in an innovation process?
    • How should ELS-X relate to other frameworks, such as RRI, ALTAI, Fundamental Rights Impact Assessments?
    • What is a best-practice example from conducting ELS-X research?

Papers will be selected based on relevance for the workshop, ability to contribute to advancing the ELS-X research approach or starting a discussion, and with attention to the interdisciplinarity of presentations.

    Submission Details and important dates

    • Poster: please send your poster for consideration by 14 September 2025 via email to a.bagattini@kit.edu with “Poster for ELSA workshop” in the subject line.
    • Short presentation: Please send your short abstracts of maximum 250 14 September 2025 via email to a.bagattini@kit.edu with “Submission for ELSA workshop” in the subject line.
    • If you would like to participate without a presentation or poster, this is of course also possible: in this case, please register by email to: a.bagattini@kit.edu

We are raising funds to award prizes for particularly outstanding contributions, so that the winners will receive a travel stipend if not covered by institutional funding.

  • Wittgenstein on Epistemic Practice: Ignorance, Hinges and Skepticism

    Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg Delmenhorst

Organizers: Hans-Johann Glock (University of Zurich), Tammo Lossau (University of Bremen), Mark Siebel (University of Oldenburg), Norman Sieroka (University of Bremen)

Keynote Speakers: Hans-Johann Glock (University of Zurich), Michael Williams (Johns Hopkins University)

Aside from an interest in linguistic practice, Wittgenstein also (primarily in On Certainty) shows an interest in our epistemic practice. His idea that our practice of doubting requires us to rely on “hinges” has gained significant prominence in recent discussions, but many of his other observations on skepticism and the idea of ignorance also allow for a range of interesting applications. Based on a close and attentive reading of Wittgenstein’s works, this workshop aims to make progress on understanding our epistemic practice and the issues surrounding it.

Presentations can be on any topic connected to Wittgenstein’s late epistemology and could include exegetical questions as well as topics from hinge epistemology or applications of Wittgenstein’s ideas to issues like conspiracy theories, echo chambers or the epistemology of democratic processes.

We are welcoming the submission of short abstracts (ca. 500-800 words) of those interested in presenting a talk at the workshop. These abstracts should be anonymized for review, but authors should disclose their name and affiliation in the e-mail. Presentations should be ca. 30 minutes long, as each slot will be 60 min. in total. Abstracts should be sent to lossau1@uni-bremen.de by October 1, 2025. We aim to notify accepted speakers by November 1, 2025. We are currently trying to acquire funding that will provide (limited) support for travel costs, but cannot guarantee such support at this point.

  • Philosophie für Alle

    Call for Speaker für Studierende
