Art der Ankündigung: Call for Paper (Veranstaltung)

  • Climate Ethics

    Dear all,

We are pleased to announce that we will hold a workshop on Climate Ethics on November 17 and 18, 2025 at the University of Heidelberg (Germany), organized by Prof. Susanne Mantel and Dr. Rutger Lazou, and seek to fill additional slots by this call for abstracts.

Given that some of the dangerous effects of climate change are already occurring today, the ethical questions that arise from this are becoming increasingly urgent. In this workshop, we aim to bring together scholars working on the moral dimensions of climate change and their implications for our actions and policies. The following people have already confirmed: Laura García-Portela (Erasmus University Rotterdam), Lukas Meyer (University Graz), Ivo Wallimann-Helmer (University Fribourg), and Anna Wienhues (KU Leuven). We would like to fill further slots by this call for abstracts, at least half of them with early career researchers.

Relevant topics include, but are not limited to: What is a fair mitigation target? Is it justified to use geoengineering as a tool for mitigation? How should the remaining permissible carbon budget be distributed? What are the responsibilities of individuals, corporations, and states in responding to climate change? How does the non-compliance of others affect our duties? What is a fair distribution of adaptation costs? What duties exist to compensate for climate-related losses and damages? What is owed to the losers of the energy transition?

Abstracts of about 300 words for presentations of about 30′ should be sent to rutger.lazou@uni-heidelberg.de, latest on September 10, 2025, and will be blindly reviewed. Please include your name and institutional affiliation in the email and attach the document with the abstract without your personal data. Accepted talks will be informed before September 15, 2025. Unfortunately, we do not have funding to cover full travel and hotel costs but may be able to provide at least partial refunds for early career researchers.

Non-presenting attendees are also more than welcome. Please register before November 3, 2025 by email to rutger.lazou@uni-heidelberg.de. There is no registration fee.

For further information, don’t hesitate to contact us.

    Best regards,

    Rutger Lazou & Susanne Mantel

  • GAP.12 Satellitenworkshop: Functional Explanation in the Philosophy of Language

Call for Abstracts (Düsseldorf, Deadline: June 30, 2025)

Workshop: Functional Explanation in the Philosophy of Language

We are pleased to invite early-career researchers to contribute talks at the workshop „Functional Explanation in the Philosophy of Language“. The workshop takes place as a „Satellite Workshop“ right after GAP.12, the international congress of the Society for Analytic Philosophy, on September 12 at Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf, Germany.

The workshop aims to bring together researchers in the philosophy of language and linguistics to focus on the role that the attribution of functions to linguistic entities such as concepts (e.g. concepts of race and gender), linguistic systems (e.g. modal and moral language), or language as a whole can play in settling debates in the philosophy of language.

Rather than focusing on particular functional hypotheses, the goal of the workshop is to address general methodological questions on the use and usefulness of functional explanations in the philosophy of language (e.g. what grounds function attribution to a linguistic entity? What impact does the choice of concept of function have on our explanations? Which types of explananda are legitimate? How could functional explanations be more useful in theorizing about language than other types of explanation? How do paradigmatic functional explanations transfer to the study of language?).

    Confirmed speakers:

    • Amie L. Thomasson (Dartmouth College)
    • Miriam Taverniers (Universiteit Gent)
    • Eliot Michaelson (King’s College London)
    • Mona Simion (University of Glasgow)
    • Christoph Kelp (University of Glasgow)

We will invite up to three early-career researchers (max. three years after acquisition of PhD) to contribute talks (30 minutes presentation, 10 minutes discussion). Should you be interested, please submit two abstracts (one short abstract of 150 words, one longer abstract of 1000 words incl. references and footnotes) to functions-gap12@uni-due.de by June 30, 2025. Notifications of acceptance will be sent out come early July.

We can cover up to two nights in a hotel as well as second class travel within Europe. Unfortunately, due to budgetary restrictions, researchers traveling from outside Europe might only be eligible for partial subsidization. If you intend to travel from outside Europe and require travel funding, please indicate so in your application.

Attendance of the workshop is free of charge, but registration prior to September 10, 2025 is required. For this as well as any further questions, please contact us via functions-gap12@uni-due.de.

  • Genetic Pain Surgery Animal Disenhancement in the Context of Genome Editing

    14 May 2025, 17:00 – 19:00

Wien, Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, Austria (Hörsaal 2H)

The advent of CRISPR/Cas9 and other modern gene-editing technologies has opened up unprecedented possibilities for modifying research animals. Following this technological progress, the possibility of genetically disenhancing animals’ ability to feel pain and pain-related suffering (hereafter referred to as “GPD” for genetic pain disenhancement) is currently being discussed as an innovative and potentially powerful solution to mitigate the ethical challenges of animal research, farm animal husbandry, and, ultimately, the suffering of wild animals. The idea of altering research animals and livestock to enable specific uses by humans emerged during the 1980s and 1990s. The fundamental concept is to adapt the phenotype of an animal so that it is better suited to life in the (otherwise harmful) conditions associated with specific uses, such as animal experimentation or meat production. With reference to the latest biotechnological developments and the advancement of genome-editing methods, Dr Samuel Camenzind’s lecture will address the current state of research and address ethical and philosophical, that have not received sufficient attention in the current debate.

    • If they differ, what are the norms of AI assertion?
    • Can artificial agents make “dark moves” in linguistic communication (e.g. lie, bullshit, deceive etc.), or do those require a full-fledged human agent?
    • Who is responsible for shortcomings in linguistic AI-human communication?
    • How do our normative expectations towards AI assertors interact with our dispositions to trust and rely on them?
    • Does the concept of trust make sense in linguistic human-AI interaction?

    CALL FOR PAPERS

The 4th International Gottlob Frege Conference will take place from 15th to 20th September 2025 in the Hanseatic town of Wismar, where the renowned mathematician and philosopher Gottlob Frege was born in 1848 and buried in 1925. This conference, held in the 100th year of his death, is  continuing a series of scientific meetings dedicated to the work of Frege and its connections to modern science. This year, the conference will focus on five key areas:

    – A comparison of Frege’s logic concept with historical and modern approaches,

    – Frege’s contributions to foundation of mathematics and modern developments

    – Frege’s linguistic analyses and modern analytic philosophy,

    – Frege’s polemics and the culture of scientific debates,

    – The ongoing influence of Frege’s work in modern science.

Conference languages are German or English. We cordially invite you to attend this conference and to give a presentation on the work of Frege and its impact on modern science (45 minutes including discussion). For registration and deadlines, please visit the conference website at

                  https://www.hs-wismar.de/frege-2025  or https://www.hs-wismar.de/en/frege-2025

The conference will offer presentations by top keynote speakers (cf. website), as well as opportunities for attendees to share their research through oral presentations and publish their papers in post-proceedings. The event will also provide a chance to interact with internationally recognized experts in a stimulating environment, set against the backdrop of a centuries-old UNESCO heritage site in the hometown of Frege.

A special part of the program on Friday will be dedicated to a memorial session in honour of the Frege scholar Lothar Kreiser (1934-2023). We welcome submissions that link to Kreiser’s work, and accepted submissions of this nature are likely to be scheduled on Friday.

  • The Normative Dimension

The conference is devoted to clarifying the nature of normativity in core areas of theoretical and practical philosophy, such as philosophy of language, philosophy of action, ethics, and epistemology. The questions to be addressed include (but are not limited) to:

    • Does linguistic meaning have an essentially normative dimension? Is language governed by rules? Can there be linguistic normativity without rules?
    • What place do norms occupy in a morality or moral outlook? What is the relationship between norms and values? Can culpability be defined in terms of norms?
    • Does knowledge or justification depend on norms? What are epistemic norms? Can they be defined instrumentally?
    • What is the relation between norms and reasons for action? Are action explanations inherently normative? Is normativity a stumbling block for naturalism?

  • Feminist Logic

Call for submissions for discussion session: Feminist Logic, Ruhr University Bochum, August 29-30, 2025

Feminist Logic is a relatively new but upcoming area of study. Work in this field sheds light on sexist (and other) biases in the area of logic. This is a very broad conception but it captures the diversity of the area of Feminist Logic. More specifically, Feminist Logic can mean…

    •  … to use logical tools for feminist ends, e.g., to uncover biases in arguments or to model social hierarchies to make patriarchal structures explicit,
    • … to look at the history of logic from a feminist perspective, e.g., by revealing so far disregarded contributions by female logicians and exposing exclusionary practices that led to their invisibility,
    • … to consider teaching practices in logic and how those disadvantage certain underrepresented groups,
    • … to devise, revise and/or argue for logical systems from a distinctly feminist perspective, e.g., certain logical systems may seem better or worse suited for formalizing feminist arguments.

This workshop aims at sharing and discussing the latest research in this area by bringing together both highly distinguished as well as early career researchers.

    List of speakers:

    Sara Ayhan (Ruhr University Bochum)

Roy T. Cook (University of Minnesota)

    Maureen Eckert (UMass Dartmouth)

Viviane Fairbank (University of St Andrews)

    Becca Kosten (University of Minnesota)

    Franci Mangraviti (University of Padova)

    Gillian Russell (Australian National University)

    Sara L. Uckelman (Durham University)

    Abstract submission for discussion session:

Next to the speakers’ presentations a discussion session is planned including short presentations (5-10 mins) focused on exploring open problems and potential research directions in Feminist Logic. We welcome proposals for presentations at this session of around 300 words to be sent to sara.ayhan@rub.de.

Members of groups that are underrepresented in logic are especially encouraged to submit.

The deadline for submission is May 18, 2025. The notification of acceptance will be sent by June 1, 2025.

    Organization and contact:

    Sara Ayhan (Ruhr University Bochum)

For any questions or inquiries please send a mail to: sara.ayhan@rub.de

Note that a Topical Collection in Synthese on the topic of the workshop is in preparation. The deadline for submissions of papers to the Topical Collection is October 1, 2025.

The conference is currently planned to be held as an in-person event. Passive online participation might be made possible, though, depending on the availability of the necessary technical support.
