With more than 1,300 members, the GAP is one of the largest philosophical societies in Europe. It aims to serve as a forum especially for German-language analytic philosophy and fosters international philosophical exchange.
The GAP is committed to making the great diversity of topics and positions in analytic philosophy in the German-speaking world more visible and to deepening scholarly exchange. It stands for the freedom of research and teaching.
In this spirit, the GAP is active in many ways: it organizes events and supports students and researchers in the early stages of their careers. It grants awards and strengthens the presence of analytic philosophy in the public sphere. It provides information on research and projects in analytic philosophy and represents philosophy vis-à-vis public and private bodies (the federal government, the Länder, foundations, etc.), for example on matters of funding policy.
Most members of the GAP are professional academic philosophers and philosophy students. However, as members, all those are warmly welcome who wish to promote analytic philosophy and make use of the benefits of GAP membership.
Alongside the German Society for Philosophy (DGPhil), the GAP is the second major philosophical association in Germany. Among other things, the GAP and the DGPhil work closely together in some working groups, including with respect to the platform PhilPublica. Beyond this, the GAP maintains numerous further national and international collaborations.
The GAP was founded in Berlin on May 26, 1990, initiated by Georg Meggle, who has since been appointed Honorary President of the GAP. In 2020, the then President Geert Keil reflected on the GAP’s 30th anniversary in this video message.
