Executive Board

The Executive Board manages the affairs of the GAP for a term of three years. In particular, it is responsible for organising and hosting the Society’s conferences.

The GAP General Assembly, which takes place at each conference organised by the Society, elects an Executive Board which, in addition to the President(s) and the Managing Director, includes five Vice Presidents, one of whom serves as Treasurer. Information on the current election regulations can be found in our Statutes.

The current Executive Board was elected at the General Assembly in September 2025. It comprises the following members.

Presidency, Managing Director & Treasury

Christine Bratu (President)

Christine Bratu is Professor of Philosophy with a focus on gender studies at the Department of Philosophy at Georg August University of Göttingen. Prior to that, she was a research associate at LMU Munich. She works on topics in analytic feminist philosophy (such as discrimination, sexism, the compatibility of paid work and care work, and quota regulations) and in practical philosophy (for example, the (im)possibility of doxastic morality and the duty to listen). From 2022 to 2025, she was spokesperson for the BMBF-funded collaborative project “Bildersturm: Making Women in Philosophy Visible and Establishing New Role Models”, and from 2016 to 2025 she was a board member and chair of SW*IP Germany.

Hans Rott (President)

Hans Rott is Professor of Theoretical Philosophy at the University of Regensburg and, since 2025, former holder of the Chair of Theoretical Philosophy there. From 2001 to 2011 he was Editor-in-Chief, and since 2011 he has been a member of the Supervisory Board of the journal Erkenntnis. From 2003 to 2012 he was Vice President of the GAP. Since 2014 he has been a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina; from 2016 to 2024 he was a member of the Philosophy Review Board of the German Research Foundation (DFG). His areas of work are primarily in philosophical logic, but also in other areas of theoretical philosophy such as epistemology, philosophy of language, and philosophy of science.

David Löwenstein (Managing Director)

David Löwenstein is an Academic Councillor at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. His interests lie primarily in various areas of theoretical philosophy, above all epistemology and argumentation theory, as well as in the didactics of philosophy. He leads the academic network “Argumentation in Schools” and is part of the interactive public philosophy project denXte, primarily as initiator, coordinator, and co-host of the podcast mitgedacht. He is co-founder and editorial board member of LehrGut, the blog on philosophical higher-education teaching.

Anna Schriefl (Treasurer & Vice President)

Anna Schriefl is Professor of the History of Philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. Previously, she was a research associate at Humboldt University of Berlin and the University of Bonn, and in 2020 also a (junior) visiting professor at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Ancient Studies Zurich (ZAZH). From 2017 to 2020 she was a Feodor Lynen Fellow at The New School in New York City. She works primarily on the philosophy of Greek antiquity. Her first book, on Plato’s critique of money and wealth, was published in 2013; her second book, an introduction to the philosophy of the ancient Stoics, was published in 2019. She also works on Aristotle’s concept of matter and his embryology.

Other Board Members

Silvia Jonas (Vice President)

Silvia Jonas is a junior professor of philosophy at Otto Friedrich University Bamberg. She studied philosophy at LMU Munich and at the Universities of St Andrews and Oxford, and earned her doctorate in philosophy at Humboldt University of Berlin. Her current research focuses on analytic metaphysics and epistemology, as well as the philosophy of mathematics and the philosophy of science. In 2023 she received the Karl Heinz Hoffmann Prize of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities; she is also committed to supporting students through the Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich Studienwerk and at SW*IP Germany.

Stephan Schmid (Vice President)

Stephan Schmid is Professor of the History of Philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Hamburg, where he conducts research on topics in metaphysics, epistemology, and philosophy of mind in the late Middle Ages and the early modern period. His work is based on the conviction that analytic philosophy can also help us better understand the philosophical views of our past, and that, conversely, contemporary debates can also benefit from a historical perspective.

Markus Schrenk (Vice President)

Markus Schrenk is Professor of Theoretical Philosophy at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. His teaching and research interests lie in metaphysics, especially the metaphysics of the natural sciences, as well as the philosophy of science and the philosophy of language. His current project, however, addresses a topic in the philosophy of art: What is proprioceptive art? Together with the team of the public philosophy project denXte, he received the 2022 Communicator Prize of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Stifterverband for Science Communication. Together with Elke Brendel, Markus served as President of the GAP from 2023 to 2025.

Moritz Schulz (Vice President)

Moritz Schulz is Professor of Theoretical Philosophy at Saarland University. His research interests lie in epistemic and decision theory (especially the role of knowledge) as well as the philosophy of language (especially conditionals). A current project examines the concept of acceptance in these three areas. Moritz Schulz received the Humboldt Prize of Humboldt University of Berlin and the GAP’s Stegmüller Prize for his dissertation. From 2022 to 2025 he was Managing Director of the Institute of Philosophy in Dresden.

Martina Fürst (Representative for Austria, co-opted)

Martina Fürst is Key Researcher of the Cluster of Excellence “Knowledge in Crisis” at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Graz and Research Associate of the African Institute for Epistemology and Science at the University of Johannesburg. Her research focuses on the philosophy of mind and epistemology, particularly social epistemology. In a current project, she investigates the role of perceptual experiences and core beliefs in the context of epistemic injustice. She is co-editor of Grazer Philosophischen Studien. An International Journal for Analytic Philosophy.

Nadja El Kassar (Representative for Switzerland, co-opted)

Nadja El Kassar is Professor of Philosophy with a focus on Theoretical Philosophy at the University of Lucerne. Her current work particularly addresses topics in social epistemology, e.g., dealing with ignorance, intellectual self-confidence, and epistemic injustice in medical contexts. Before coming to Lucerne, she was a Visiting Professor at FU Berlin (2020–2023), a Postdoc at ETH Zurich (2013–2019) and at the University of Zurich (2019–2020). She completed her doctorate on the epistemic significance of perception in 2013 at the University of Potsdam. Nadja El Kassar is Chair of the Board of the “Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Lucerne” (GSL) and overall academic director of the continuing education program “Philosophy and Medicine” in Lucerne.
