  • How to be a Transcendental Idealist

„How to be a Transcendental Idealist”

by Nicholas F. Stang, Professor of Philosophy, University of Toronto

    Monday, June 29th, 16:00-18:00 c.t., LMU München, Geschw.-Scholl-Pl. 1 Rm C 022

In this talk I articulate Transcendental Idealism (TI) purely as a position in metaphysics. I argue that it is superior, in numerous respects, to its contemporary rivals (e.g. deflationism, inflationary realism, physicalism, etc.). I show that various objections that have been raised against TI over the centuries are either based on misunderstandings, or can be answered. While work remains to be done, TI deserves to be one of the main contenders in contemporary metaphysics.

  • Neo-Emotions: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Feelings and Change

The concept of ‘neo-emotions’ is based on the idea that our emotional range changes over time and in context. Not only have the meanings of classic terms such as anger, happiness, or embarrassment been transformed, but new kinds of emotions have also emerged. This workshop brings together scholars from different disciplines to examine how feelings become established emotions, which conditions catalyse ‘inventing’ new emotions, and what role digital technologies and AI play in this context.

The event is organised jointly by Kathryn Temple, Professor of Law & Humanities at Georgetown University (USA) who is currently a Senior Fellow at the College for Social Sciences and Humanities (UA Ruhr), and Eva Weber-Guskar, Professor of Ethics and Philosophy of Emotions at Ruhr University Bochum.

  • NORA (Normative Reasons and AI) Workshop

This one-day workshop brings together researchers from philosophy and computer science to explore the intersection of normative reasoning and machine learning. Topics include the structure of practical and epistemic reasons, how neural networks may be explained using reasons, the coherence of AI preference orderings, and the broader question of what it would mean for an AI system to be genuinely reason-responsive.

Please find the venue and schedule on the website and write us a short mail if you would be interested in attending.

  • Knowledge, Power, and Social Life

How can epistemology help us to better understand and overcome the crisis of knowledge? The aim of this conference is to showcase cutting edge work on knowledge: its nature and norms as well as its social and political dimensions. We want to foster exchange between different approaches to knowledge and the crisis it finds itself in. At the heart of the crisis of knowledge are philosophical problems about the relationship between knowledge, truth, science, ethics and politics—and ultimately our relationship to reality itself.
