  • Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter:in – Karlsruhe & Melbourne

One fully funded PhD position “Ethics of care and just mobility transitions” in philosophy within the international research training group C4LaNd-Competition for Land (https://c4land.earth/). This joint PhD project will be primarily based at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) with a minimum 12-month stay at the University of Melbourne.

    Project Description

A just transition involves respecting the perspectives of many stakeholders. So far climate ethics focuses (mainly) on future generations, energy ethics recently has put the focus (also) onto often marginalized groups that may be severely impacted by an energy transition (e.g Heffron et al 2017, Jenkins 2021). A just transition needs to address both aspects. As an answer to this challenge, care ethics has been suggested to augment considerations of energy ethics (Gram-Hanssen 2024, Frigo et al 2023). Also, in the emerging inter- and transdisciplinary field of mobility and transport justice a potential central role of care ethics has been discussed (e.g. Verlinghieri et al 2020).

The research question to be addressed here is as to how the ethics of care can augment research on fairness and equity of mobility and land use. While often ethical considerations are added as an afterthought in regional and urban planning, the aim of this project is to develop a blueprint of how to integrate ethical aspects into the full cycle of urban and regional planning, including mobility and land use. A particular focus will be set on how to ethically balance competing interests and how to integrate t he uncertainties of potential impacts.

This is a conceptual project and uses tools mainly from (analytic) philosophy. The work involves key fields of applied ethics (mobility justice, energy ethics, research ethics, and engineering ethics) as well as political philosophy (capabilities approach) and normative ethics (care ethics). The project aims to blend philosophy with stakeholder engagement, for example, by the use of public forms of reflective equilibrium (Wolff & De Shalit 2007, 2024) or reflective equilibrium stakeholder workshops (e.g. Brandstedt et. al 2024). While also considering mobility or transport transitions more broadly, the focus will be on indigenous mobility justice and a close link with a twin project.

This PhD project examines how care ethics can help the planners and designers of mobility transitions to identify and address ethical problems that are preliminarily assumed to involve high empirical uncertainties as well as competing values. A moral framework based on care ethics considerations to address value conflicts in design and planning is devised. The PhD project will also examine in detail how such a ‘micro ethical approach’ can be linked to considerations of (transport, mobility or energy) justice. Here it will be explored to what extent the capability approach may serve as a connecting link between the care ethical approach on the micro level and macro or meso ethical approaches to justice, or whether care ethics (e.g. Held 2006, Tronto 2013) can itself provide such a macro ethical framework for mobility (energy) justice.

  • Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter:in – Universität Oldenburg

    Postdoc in „(Re)examining modelling“ (d/f/m/x) (HIPP 27.3)

The modern world increasingly relies on mathematical models, but the number of people who build and understand these models is incredibly small. It is therefore reasonable to ask whether we can and should trust these models and those who develop them. This project will examine the ethics and power structures of modelling. More importantly, it seeks to explore how the general public can be empowered to critically discuss modelling methods and assumptions without requiring full understanding the mathematical intricacies of the models. The work will involve a deep, critical questioning of practices in mathematical modelling, exploration of the ways in which mathematical models produce insights, discussion of modelling to shape debates and formulation of best practices. Key questions include:

    • How do models produce insights?

    • How is the power of modelling used?

    • How can models be understood, questioned, and criticized by the public?

You’ll be working with an interdisciplinary team of experts that includes, among others, Rossella Alba (Social Science, Science, Technology Studies and Human Geography), Mark Siebel (Philosophy) and Thilo Gross (Mathematical Modelling).

    Requirements include:

    • PhD in a relevant subject (e.g., philosophy, Science and Technology Studies)

    • Interest in philosophy of mathematical modelling

    • Willingness to engage in interdisciplinary research

    • Very good knowledge of the English language (approximately equivalent to CEFR level C1).

For further information on the specific position, please reach out to Prof Dr Rossella Alba (rossella.alba@hifmb.de) or Prof Dr Thilo Gross (thilo.gross@hifmb.de). If you have any general questions about the application process, our Recruiting team will be glad to support you – please contact Elisabeth Wildt (bewerbungsmanagement@awi.de, +49 471 4831-2236).

This is a full-time position, limited to 3 years. It is also suitable for part-time employment. The salary will be paid in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the Public Service of the Federation (Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes, TVöD Bund), up to salary level 13. The place of employment will be Oldenburg.

Please submit your application online only by July 20th, 2026 (https://jobs.awi.de/Vacancies/2197/Application/New/1). We kindly ask you to apply in English. No photo is required – we value your qualifications and experience. Interviews are planned for the mid until end of August, 2026.

Applicants are required to submit an extended cover letter (max. 2 pages) describing their fit to the position and criteria, and complete the template CV provided (https://jobs.awi.de/Vacancies/2197/Description/2?ShowDocument=4). Please do not submit a CV not in this format.

If you are applying from abroad and are interested in academic positions in Germany, it may generally be helpful to check and possibly have your degrees recognized in advance via the ANABIN database (https://anabin.kmk.org/cms/public/startseite).

  • Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter:in (Doktorand:in) – Universität Ulm

As part of the Research Training Group KEMAI – Knowledge Infusion and Extraction for Explainable Medical AI, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), a PhD position in the field of digital ethics is available from January 2027 onward. The project is situated at the intersection of philosophy, computer science, and medicine and investigates the role of explainable AI (XAI) in clinical decision-making contexts.

The PhD project will be jointly supervised by Prof. Dr. Rebekka Hufendiek and Dr. Hauke Behrendt.

The KEMAI team aims to combine the benefits of knowledge-based and learning-based systems in order not only to achieve state-of-the-art accuracy in medical diagnosis, but also to communicate predictions to physicians in an interpretable and clinically meaningful way, while taking ethical implications within medical decision-making processes into account.

KEMAI’s central goal is to provide interdisciplinary doctoral training in explainable medical AI for researchers from computer science, medicine, and philosophy. The RTG offers a structured doctoral program that creates an environment in which early-career researchers can conduct high-level interdisciplinary research in the field of medical AI.

We invite highly motivated candidates with a strong interest in research and a desire to contribute to an interdisciplinary academic environment to apply. The position is funded for 3+1 years and comes with a 65% TV-L E13 salary.

The deadline for applications is the 30th of June 2026

For further information, please visit the RTG website: https://kemai.uni-ulm.de/

In addition to the requested documents, please attach a writing sample (e.g., a chapter from your MA-thesis or a draft paper)

A possible PhD project could focus, for example, on medical scenarios in which AI systems generate diagnostic or therapeutic recommendations and thereby become involved in potentially high-stakes decisions. The central question is under what conditions such recommendations can be explained in a way that enables responsible clinical judgment.

Explainability is not primarily understood as mere technical transparency of models, but rather as a practice-oriented form of justification. The project develops an approach that conceives of explanations as context-, stakeholder-, and risk-sensitive practices. Explanations must therefore be aligned with specific decision-making situations, the epistemic roles of the actors involved, and the potential consequences and risks associated with the decision.

The project assumes that the requirements for adequate explanations increase with the stakes involved: the greater the potential impact on affected individuals, the greater the justificatory burden explanations must satisfy.

A particular focus lies on guideline-based explanations, which enable the assessment of AI outputs in light of established medical guidelines and diagnostic criteria. In this way, the project seeks to strengthen the active role of clinical decision-makers, reduce overreliance on AI systems, and improve the attribution of responsibility within socio-technical decision-making contexts.

While the project is primarily conceptual in orientation, it explicitly aims at interdisciplinary integration. The criteria developed within the project will be further specified in close collaboration with participating disciplines within the KEMAI cluster and, in the longer term, translated into technical and empirical research contexts.

  • Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter:in – Universität Heidelberg

Heidelberg University is a comprehensive university with a strong focus on research and international standards. With around 32,200 students and 9,540 employees, including numerous top researchers, it is a globally respected institution that also has outstanding economic significance for the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region.

The Department of Philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy, Heidelberg University, is seeking to fill a part-time (65%) postdoctoral research position leading to a PhD, as part of the three-year DFG project ‘Normative Conflicts: Normative Monism, Deliberation, and Morality’s Place’, to start as soon as possible (preferably 1 October). The position is limited to three years; an extension for a further year may be possible.

Normative conflicts arise when norms of different domains (moral, prudential, epistemic…) seem to yield incompatible obligations. While normative pluralists deny the existence of a domain-independent ought (ought simpliciter) which could decide such conflicts, monists defend that possibility. The DFG-project aims to contribute to this debate in several respects. The advertised position will focus on the relative role and special place of morality within the multitude of domains and will especially inquire into the prospects for a domain-independent consequentialist view.
