At this interdisciplinary workshop, we explore questions about the nature of bias and the ways it influences, and is shaped through, public discourse. Relevant topics include, but are not limited, to

  • Conceptual, formal, and normative accounts of bias
  • Surveys of different types of bias
  • The role of bias in argumentation and argument evaluation
  • Case studies of bias in public discourse
  • Deliberation under condition of, and as a remedy for, bias
  • Bias and rationality in public discourse
  • Implicit attitudes, fundamental beliefs, and stereotypes
  • Bias and group identity

Invited talks will be given by Justin Bruner (University at Buffalo), Ulrike Hahn (Birkbeck, University of London), Aileen Oeberst (University of Potsdam), and Mariusz Urbański (Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań).

Everyone is invited to submit their work for presentation. We would particularly like to encourage PhD students and postdocs to submit recent and in-progress work. We will be happy to offer support for travel and accommodation expenses for accepted presentations.

Please see the workshop webpage for details on how to submit.
