The workshop takes place as a Satellite Workshop right after GAP.12, on September 12 at Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf, Germany.
It brings together researchers in the philosophy of language and linguistics to focus on the role that the attribution of functions to linguistic entities such as concepts (e.g. concepts of race and gender), speech acts, linguistic systems (e.g. modal and moral language), or language as a whole can play in settling debates in the philosophy of language.
Speakers:
- Amie L. Thomasson (Dartmouth): Linguistic Functions and Conceptual Engineering.
- Miriam Taverniers (Gent): The Power of Grammatical Metaphor. A Metafunctional Perspective.
- Jules Holroyd (Sheffield): Fixing (or Ameliorating?) the Social Function of Praise. [online]
- Jorge Bonet Gómez (Wollongong): Do Spiders Threaten Each Other? Toward a Cross-Species Theory of Illocutionary Acts.
- Eliot Michaelson (King’s College): Deception and Social Repair.
See tinyurl.com/functiongap for abstracts and workshop schedule.
Attendance is free of charge, but registration prior to September 10 via email (functions-gap12@uni-due.de) is required.
