This one-day workshop brings together scholars of early modern philosophy and German idealism to comment on and discuss topics related to Jim Kreines’s new book ‘Hegel and Spinoza’ (Cambridge University Press 2026). The book concerns Hegel’s engagement with Spinoza’s metaphysics, including Hegel’s interpretation of Spinoza’s monism, his criticism that Spinoza’s philosophy must eliminate all finitude and determinacy, and the way in which understanding this engagement can help us understand Hegel’s Logic.
The event is hosted by Sebastian Bender and Andrew Stephenson at LMU, Munich. The speakers are: Jim Kreines, Claremont McKenna; Karolina Hübner, UCLA; Ulrich Schlösser, Tübingen; Andreas Schmidt, Jena. Participation is free and open but please let u s know if you will attend so that we have an accurate idea of numbers.
