The Chair of Logic and Philosophy of Language (held by Professor Hannes Leitgeb) at LMU Munich, based in the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy, seeks to appoint by 01.10.2026 (or earlier)

two doctoral fellows (TV-L E13, 65% part-time), each for the duration of 3 years.

The two doctoral fellows will be part of a new project group that will be devoted to the logic of epistemic reasons (reasons for beliefs) and of practical reasons (reasons for actions). The project will deal with questions, such as: How can we logically analyze the reason-for relation? Which general laws does that relation obey? How can reasons relate to each other logically? How does the logic of reasons relate to other logical or formal systems?

    Your responsibilities:

    • Doctoral research in the thematic area of the logic of reasons (logical/formal systems for the analysis of epistemic or practical reasons, relationship between reasons and doxastic/epistemic logic, deontic logic, hyperintensional logic, non-monotonic logic, conditional logic, belief revision, ranking functions, subjective probability, formal epistemology, formal action theory, formal ethics, decision theory, philosophy of logic) and dissemination of such research through publications and participation in seminars, conferences, and workshops. The doctoral thesis should be written in English and will be supervised by Professor Leitgeb.
    • Participation in other activities at the Chair (research, administration, conference and workshop organisation, and, if desired, teaching).

    Your profile:

    • Candidates should have successfully completed a master program in philosophy. The master degree must have been awarded by the beginning of the contract.
    • Candidates should have a strong analytic, logical, and (depending on their research area) mathematical orientation and aptitude.
    • Candidates should be capable of engaging in teamwork.
    • Strong English language skills are required .

    Conditions of employment:

The salary will be calculated according to group E 13 TVL-employment (65%, part-time). The positions are limited to three years. Successful applicants will also have funds available to attend workshops and conferences.

Given broadly equal qualifications, preference will be given to candidates with disabilities. We especially encourage women and candidates from underrepresented groups to apply.

Applications should be written entirely in English and should include:

    • a cover letter that addresses the candidate’s academic profile and their motivation for applying for the advertised positions,
    • a proposal for a dissertation on the logic of reasons (maximally five pages),
    • a CV and an academic transcript of grades.

These materials should be collated into a single PDF document and sent to applications.leitgeb@lrz.uni-muenchen.de by 07.02.2026. The subject line of the email should include „PhD application“ and the name of the applicant.

    Furthermore,

Project description: The research project will shed new light on the conflicts between liberty and material equality, as well as between individual well-being and material equality. It will do so by examining the price of equality, assessing whether and in what ways it can be traded off against liberty and well-being. By drawing on formal methods and results from economics, especially from social choice theory and decision theory, the project aims to identify the precise ways in which individual freedom is incompatible with a commitment to material equality and aims to develop dynamic models and calibration arguments that examine the conflicts between material equality and well-being.

  • Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter:in (Doktorand:in) – Geneva, Switzerland

CFA: Postdocs and PhD positions in Philosophy of Physics, Geneva

Open positions in philosophy of physics: 2 PhD Fellowships

Geneva Symmetry Group, Department of Philosophy, University of Geneva

The Department of Philosophy, University of Geneva invites applications for four positions for Christian Wüthrich’s ERC Advanced Grant ‚EPIFRONT–At the epistemic frontiers of physics‘:

    – two 3-year Postdoc Fellowships (please see separate job ad), and

    – two 4-year PhD Fellowships.

The project will be housed at the Geneva Symmetry Group, which is part of the Department of Philosophy of the University of Geneva (https://genevasymmetrygroup.wordpress.com/).

The positions will start on 1 August 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

For a brief description of the project, please see below.

PhD candidates must have completed an MA degree in philosophy or in physics. Successful candidates are expected to have a strong background either in philosophy of science or in advanced physics and some preparation to do work in the other field, for example in the form of previous coursework. Relevant background in philosophy is philosophy of physics, general philosophy of science, and metaphysics; in physics, it includes general relativity, quantum theory, and, if possible, quantum field theory and quantum gravity.

It should be noted that candidates are not expected to contribute to *all* aspects of the project (see below).

For all posts, candidates must have excellent communication skills in English. Proficiency in French is not necessary at the time of application (but PhD candidates will eventually have to pass a French exam before submitting their thesis).

Applications from members of groups that are currently underrepresented in academic philosophy are strongly encouraged.

The application dossier must contain the following in a single PDF file named simply ‚[your last name].pdf‘ to be sent to Prof. Christian Wüthrich at christian.wuthrich@unige.ch by 20 January 2026 in order to ensure full consideration:

‐ cover letter explaining your research interests and experience

    – proposal of no more than one page for research to be conducted in the context of EPIFRONT, indicating the direction(s) in which the work would be intended (i.e., (1), (2), or (3) in the description at https://genevasymmetrygroup.wordpress.com/)

    ‐ CV

‐ Master thesis or a writing sample

‐ 2 names and e‐mail addresses for potential academic references who would be prepared to send their letter on short notice should the candidate be shortlisted

A candidate can be considered for multiple directions (1), (2), or (3) in the description at https://genevasymmetrygroup.wordpress.com/, but in this case multiple research proposals should be included in the submission, one for each direction of interest.
